Blake, Federer, Roddick look for spot in quarterfinals
NEW YORK - Sep 3 : Three of the top six seeds - Americans Andy Roddick and James Blake and three-time defending champion Roger Federer - will all be in action. If Roddick and Federer advance, they would reprise last year's final.
Roddick, the No. 5 seed, must get past powerful Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the day's second match at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Roddick was particularly impressive in his third-round victory over Swede Thomas Johansson, a straight-set affair in which he registered 19 aces and 41 winners.
Federer, meanwhile, dropped his first set of the tournament Saturday, but overcame the monstrous serve of fan favorite John Isner to advance. In the nightcap Monday, he meets Spain's Feliciano Lopez, who ended 18-year-old Donald Young's surprising run.
It's been an emotional first week for sixth-seeded Blake. He won the first five-set match of a Grand Slam in his career - he was 0-9 prior - in the second round, taking out France's Fabrice Santoro. He was particularly animated in a late night four-set win over Austria's Stefan Koubek. Playing to the crowd, the usually reserved Yonkers, New York product threw fist pumps into the air and let out primal screams.
Blake may need even more theatrics to get by German Tommy Haas on Monday afternoon. Seeded 10th, the big-serving and emotional Haas is still in search of his first Grand Slam title. He has run the gamut in Flushing so far, dropping a set in each of his first two victories and going the distance to eliminate Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean after nearly blowing a 2-0 sets advantage.
Also in action will be fourth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko, who will take on Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Of all the top seeds, Davydenko has been perhaps the most impressive, winning each of his three matches in straight sets while putting up two bagels in the process.
